Everyone wants to be the most efficient and productive person they can be, but distractions are more than abundant in our day-to-day lives. Science has now confirmed the fact that our attention spans are shorter than a goldfish.

But improving focus can have more positive benefits then simply getting more done. Achieving flow more often has been found to contribute to overall more positive emotions, as well as better work performance.

If you’re not familiar with flow, it occurs when you reach total and complete focus on a task. Time seems to slip away, as well as any outside distractions. Some would speculate that flow depends on the task at hand, but there are ways to achieve this by improving your focus and brain health.

Is there a tried and true way to become more focused? Well, it depends mostly on training yourself to become more focused and developing the right habits. Here are some things you can do to help improve your focus and make yourself the most productive person you can be at any given time.

Mindful Meditation

Meditation has shown evidence of improving your attention span by increasing the brain’s gray matter, reducing stress, improving memory, and enhancing your self-awareness. All these things are beneficial to keep your mind healthy, which will give you an edge in whatever you do. Practicing gratitude is a nice way to meditate, yet there are many ways to do it.

Meditation can be practiced at work and performed while sitting down in a chair. A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience found that people who practice meditation are better at shutting down their brain and achieving a mindful state of focus and relaxation. The keyword is practice because the more you meditate, the greater the overall effects you receive from it.

Taking Walks in Nature

Sometimes you might think you do not have time for this, but even the small amounts of time that you take to walk in nature can come to create a compounding effect in your life. If you live in a city, walking around is helpful in aiding in a more active lifestyle. Taking 30 minutes to walk around everyday will do wonderful things for your body and mind to keep you fit.

Aside from promoting mindfulness and relaxation, exercise can help aid in the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This neurochemical has been found to be instrumental in affecting parts of the brain that control memory. But regular exercise can also help lower blood pressure, give you more energy, and prevent you from crashing when you need concentration the most.

Eating the Healthy Foods

Eating the right foods will give you the proper vitamins and minerals that improve brain function. Foods, such as avocados, blueberries, dark chocolate, green tea, leafy greens, nuts, and salmon will aid in your productivity and focus. Finding simple snacks consisting of these foods can be time efficient if you do not have time to create meals. So to make your snacking convenient and efficient, there are snack delivery services to help cut down on bad dietary habits.

Writing your thoughts down can help you organize your thoughts and even just get your brain working. It can be therapeutic, because it allows you to focus on your experiences and emotions, which enables you to gain mental and emotional clarity, validate experiences and come to a deeper understanding of yourself. After expressing your thoughts, the clarity you receive helps push you further on.

Just doing something fun allows you to lose yourself within it and it can be a childlike experience without stressing out about your responsibilities. Grabbing a lunch with friends, getting a massage, having time to yourself, relaxing, and playing sports are nice ways for you to take your mind off things that could bother you.

Stress can affect concentration in both mental and physical ways. Not only can it ruin your focus, but it can also raise blood pressure and cause a number of symptoms that can directly impact your focus and centration.

Find your own way to let off stress and relax. Ironically, by shutting off your mind can you work to improve concentration.

Your physical health is directly linked to your mental well being. Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? I don’t know. Working to improve your productivity and focus starts with establishing the right habits.

A habit is a regular tendency that allows your brain to turn some tasks into the easiest of procedures, so it can focus on harder tasks. These can be for better or for worse, but implementing these habits allow you to improve your focus and productivity and to help reach your best self.
