Destiny was created by Bungie the same game development studio that created Halo. Halo was very successful and this is one of the reasons that led to a lot of hype around Destiny. Another reason is that the game attempted to meld two popular genres, shooting games and large internet-connected game worlds in which players interact with one another. Destiny was published by Activision.
Destiny has turned out to be the most pre-ordered new game in history and also topped weekly order surveys by VGChartz. This new game asks you to take the role of a character with other-worldly powers referred to as “guardian” to help protect humanity.
Activision says it has sold $500 million worth of the game to retailers, a figure that has never been seen in the new game franchise launch history.
“Since the beginning, we’ve been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we’d be able to say it did so on day one. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation, and Activision’s next billion dollar brand,” said Eric Hirshberg, the head of Activision’s game publishing arm.
An analyst at WedBush Securities, Michael Pachter said the sales even exceeded his expectations. He expected the game could sell 10 million units this year if it got good reviews. But Activism managed to sell that number of units in one day!
“Although it is possible that Activision stuffed the channel, we do not think that outcome is likely. The game will likely exceed my estimates over the next year as well,” he said. Patcher added that he now expects the sales to reach 18 million.
