A new study reveals that eating fruits everyday could actually help you live longer.
The 7-year study was conducted by the University of Oxford’s Clinical Trial Service Unit and Epidemiological Studies Unit and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. It was presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Barcelona.
The study involved 400,000 people who lives in China and found out that the more fruits people eat their risk of cardiovascular diseases significantly lowers.
Oxford University’s Dr. Huaidong Du said cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in the world.
The study shows that eating fruits everyday reduces the risk for cardiovascular diseases including ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and haemorrhagic stroke.
Besides cardiovascular diseases, eating fruits regularly also lower your blood pressure, the study shows.
According to the study, 150 grams of fruit everyday is the right amount. The researchers also found that the effect of eating fruits on cardiovascular diseases was independent from the lower baseline BP.
China Kadoorie Biobank principal investigator Zhengming Chen said eating fruits should be encouraged among patients with hypertension and CVD.
There have been other studies of this sort. A study from the University College of London reveals that eating fruits and vegetables a day can lower the risk of death by 42 percent.
