Physical therapy, exercise and doctor’s orders are your best bet when it comes to physical recovery. But there a few things you can do on your own to help your body along the way.


This is usually the last thing that people want to hear. But, you have to rest an injury. Returning to work, school, or sports too soon increases your risk of reinjuring yourself.

Hot-Cold Contrast

Therapeutic contrasting is when you quickly change tissues temperature. You do this by applying ice and rapidly then applying heat. The quick contrast acts as a gentle tissue workout that is helpful for body parts in need of rest.


Topicals are a great way to relieve pain. Just be careful that you don’t get one that is full of chemicals. A few excellent choices of natural topicals are magnesium and frankincense. Frankincense is excellent for sprains and soreness that comes as a result of an injury.


The physical pain is not the only type of pain you will endure if you’ve suffered from an injury. Serious accidents can cause a lot of mental strife as well. If It’s wise to acknowledge the mental stress and to try and do something to manage it.

Focus on What Makes You Happy, Not the Pain

There is no denying that being injured causes disappointment—especially if you’ve suffered some sort of emotional loss. You can’t beat yourself up with “what if” and Googling things like placental abruption causes isn’t going to change things. It’s hard, but you need to remember that there are things in life that make you feel good. Focus on those things.

An excellent way to stay focused on the positive is to keep a journal. Each night before bed, you can remind yourself about the good things so that the side effects of your injury don’t make you feel bad.

Develop an Exercise Routine

Routine is vital when you are battling the blues. And, if your body is banged up, it’s likely not getting the exercise its used to. That doesn’t mean that you can’t establish some sort of exercise routine that is manageable.

You don’t have to go enroll in a Cross-Fit academy. But, a short walk in the park or stroll around the mall can do wonders for your mental state. Commit to some physical exercise to stimulate your brain and get your blood moving.


The accident that led to your injury is likely to be at the forefront of your thinking. If you are like most, you relive it day in and day out. But the truth is, that’s not doing you any good. You need to focus on moving forward. When you set your sites on recovery, you are putting yourself in a position to overcome rather than to be held back.
