For a first time ever, a woman with a donated womb gave birth to a baby.
The unnamed woman is from Sweden. She gave birth prematurely to a 4 lb baby boy who was fortunately healthy.
The 36-year-old woman struggled with infertility issues for a long time until the doctors implanted in her a new womb, which was donated by her friend.
The woman who gave birth after given the new womb was suffering from a congenital disorder called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser. Eight other Swedish women were given uterine transplant from 2012 to 2013.
The new wombs were given mostly by their family members, even their mothers. The 36-year-old woman received her new womb from a 61-year-old friend who went through menopause seven years before the surgery in 2013.
According to the baby’s father, they went through a tough journey for so many years, but now they have an amazing baby. He said their baby is just like any other child, but he will have a better story to tell.
This procedure gives hope for all the women in the world suffering from infertility.
Liza Johannesson, one of the gynaecological surgeon who conducted the procedure said this is good news for women and men who thought that having a child is an impossibility.
