How it Works?
Metacam like other NSAIDs works by inhibiting the hormones that cause inflammation and pain in your pet’s body. Once the hormones are under control, pain causing agents are kept on hold and thus the body can resume normal body activities.
Cautions and warnings
- While it is practically safe to use this product, you should consult your doctor prior to administering this product. More importantly, you should not use Metacam in the last third of pregnancy or with nursing dogs. The manufacturer cannot guarantee the safety of this product on pregnant or breastfeeding animals.
- It is not recommended to be used on animals with heart, kidney, or liver disease. In case your pet has a history of such disease, inform your vet.
- In case your pet has bloody, tarry or black stool, or blood in the vomit, it might be a sign of serious symptoms that could signal serious side effects. Some of the side effects you can expect include; allergic reactions (swelling of lips, difficulty breathing) open sores, muscle cramps, rapid weight gain, seizures and abdominal cramping.
- Mild effects include; headache, nausea, dizziness, constipation, fatigue or weakness, depression, or dry mouth.
- It has been reported that repeated use of this product in cats has been associated with renal failure and death.
- Store this product away from pets and children
- In case of accidental overdose, inform your vet immediately. It can have harmful effects in both animals and pets alike.
Directions of use
Like earlier stated, Metacam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) prescription medication used to fight pain, reduce inflammation, and muscle stiffness resulting from chronic musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis.
Make sure to inform your vet in case your pet is taking other medication or has any of the following conditions;
- Heart disease or high blood pressure
- Allergic to aspirin or any other NSAID
- Liver or kidney diseases
- An ulcer or stomach bleeding
- Fluid retention
- Congestive heart failure
- Bleeding disorders
The recommended dosage is 0.1mg per pound as the initial dose when it is used in the first day, then the dosage is reduced to 0.05mg per pound once a day thereafter.
