If you have been hoping for an Apple TV set, you will have to wait a little longer. It may arrive in 2016 that is according to Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster.
Munster said that an Apple television is in the offing and the phenomenon is quite possible in 2016.
Apple has already unveiled an Apple Watch and a pair of big screened iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. So what could be their next move?
Gene Munster returned to his mantra of an Apple TV set. He has been forecasting such a product for the past few years but Apple is yet to produce one. Instead Apple has continued to focus on mobile devices.
Apple has offered the Apple TV set-top boxes for many years but has not considered a TV set. In case the Apple TV hits the market, it would likely take shape as a full-blown HDTV set having access to online and traditional apps, entertainment and other content.
Munster said it is easy to dismiss his insistence on the television given the number of times he has predicted and it has not come to pass. However on 12th September, Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Charlie Rose that TV is a category in which they have great interest in.
Munster noted that Apple has ‘taken a stab’ at TV with Apple TV and claimed that it is an area Apple continues to look at. “We also note that in Steve Jobs’ biography in 2011 he stated that he felt he finally cracked the TV. We believe the evidence remains that something is there, the question remains when,” Cook said.
The TV business is not easy, though. Apple would have to first establish the necessary agreements with cable companies and other content providers.
It is intimated that Apple had already run into challenges in its negotiations with those businesses. Especially those that want to control their own stuff and are therefore not motivated to cut deals with Apple.
“It would seem that an Apple television is unlikely in 2015 and quite possible in 2016,” Munster said.
“We believe Apple still has work to do in terms of developing content relationships and developing a gaming platform. We also believe that ultimately the television can become a home hub as the connected home evolves. Thus the next step for Apple with regard to the television may likely be the introduction of an updated Apple TV box that includes some gaming and possibly Siri,” he added.
