Over 300 investors had taken part in the Maldives’s first investment forum which was held in Singapore on 25th April 2014. The Ministry of Economic Development of the Maldivian Government has taken this initiative showcasing Maldives as an attractive investment destination.
The President of Maldive, H E Abdulla Yemen Abdul Gayoom had inaugurated the forum and gave an impressive speech to the audience there, shared his dreams of seeing Maldives a highly developed country. Important projects of the Maldivian government towards the strategic development of the country were unveiled among the corporate and individual investors that had come to attend the forum from all over the world.
Investors from over 15 countries were present in the forum. The countries include Singapore, USA, India, Germany and China. The Economic Ministry was highly delighted to have such an overwhelming response from so many countries. The Director of the Ministry said he was pleased to see such a huge number of investors.
Among the investors some very prominent ones were Blackstone which an American investment company; Singapore-based HPL Hotels and Resorts; China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC); the Carlson Group of Companies; Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts; United Bunkering and Trading Group; and Singapore Enterprise.
Five mega projects were presented in the forum including the economic development of Ihavandhippolhu, oil and gas exploration in the Maldives, the shifting of a commercial harbor to Thilafushi,development of ; ‘I-Heaven’ and Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and the second phase of Hulhumale island.
The speakers at the forum were Abdulla Yameen, President of Maldives; and Mohamed Saeed, Economic Minister, Maldives and a few local business tycoons.
