Giant casino company MGM Resorts in collaboration with others on Monday announced they are planning to construct a 33-acre open-air music venue on the Las Vegas Strip in preparations to host a four-day Rock in Rio USA festival scheduled to commence in May 2015.
In reference to MGM Resorts International officials, “City of Rock” development set to be built between the Circus Circus resort and Sahara Avenue is expected to serve as home to what they are hoping will be one of the biggest concert festival events in the world.
Brazil was the first country to host Rock in Rio in 1985, where 600,000 tickets for the event last September sold out in four hours, in reference to the planners. Celebrities in attendance included Justin Timberlake, Metallica, Beyonce, and Bruce Springsteen. Portugal and Spain have also held such festivals from the same organization.
Roberto Medina, the founder of Rock in Rio, said he was excited to be in partnership for the first Rock in Rio USA event to be held in the heart of Las Vegas with casino giant MGM Resorts, a number of Las Vegas show producer Cirque du Soleil and developer Ron Burke of the California-based Yucaipa companies LLC.
President of MGM Resorts Bill Hornbuckle realized dramatic changes in the entertainment industry over the past few years and said he had no doubts that the four-day music festival in Las Vegas will attract more than 300,000 fans.
The plan of the venue will include five stages, themed streets featuring sites, sounds, and foods from Brazil, the United Kingdom, and thrill rides and shopping.
Site plans as well as cost figures for the City of Rock development were not announced and will need to be reviewed and approved by Clark County lawmakers. Tickets are expected to be out on sale from January 2015.
The occasion will be conducted separately from the three-night Electric Daisy Carnival Electronic music festival, conducted in June in Las Vegas Motorway Speedway. It is attended by more than 100,000 fans, according Insomniac, its parent company.
