Rugby On the National Scene

Men’s and women’s rugby teams went 2-1 during the weekend competition at Wayne State in Wayne, Neb, becoming the biggest rugby competition in the country.

Over 80 teams from the U.S. and Canada took part. During the last years completion, none won a game.

Skylar Hortop, sophomore recruitment chair, said that they played very well.

Hortop believes that the improvement came from a mind set change during practices, adding that they have girls who seriously want to be in it this year and others willing to help. She added the in last year, they were only having three of four girls at their practices, and they have 10-12 in this year.

Senior Patrick, who set to move into a coaching position for the men’s team in 2015, said that publicity of the tournament was encouraging players.

Senior said that anyone can go to any competition but the big ones with thousands of people in attendance are what make people want to play. Additionally, sharing a common interest with those many people seen at the weekend motivated people to go for practice.

Hortops stated theta women were practicing with men and that they get 20-30 people together to run drills.

She said that it makes practicing easier a lot better and each learn more from the other.

Taylor Middlebrooks, a first year, said that as a team of players working on seven rugby, which is different from traditional rugby since there are half number of players in a field.

“It which makes the style of play different,” he said. “It’s new to everybody and a lot of guys have other commitments, which make it hard to get to practice, but once we get on the field everyone has a good experience.”

Artz, who is reported to have been in rugby for long, also said that the level of play has improved, and that Rugby has remained a big factor and that he is doing it for the rest of his life. He noted that the club sports provide a way for scholars to establish relationships, as well as become healthier.

Artz said he has noticed a big jump in the level of play this year, adding that he hails from a pre-diabetic family, and he has lost all the weight and feels healthier. He hopes to inspire others.

The teams are currently preparing for competition in Brookings set for this weekend and Middlesbrooks said that spreading out on defense and an offensive line will be their focus of practices up to the competition,

He also said that setting up an offensive line to keep the game continuous may sound obvious but they really want to do that with the sevens. Saying that usually at USD everyone hats SDSU guys, he said that there is a lot of fun with their teams that they have a great time with them.
