After a nightmarish start losing to Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the opening set, Maria Sharapova mustered all her resilience to bounce back and win in Tuesday’s French Open securing a place in the semi-finals.
The game kicked off with a 6-1 in favour of Muguruza. Then as Sharapova made a daring fight back, the tables turned and the scoreboard became 7-5 in favour of the Russian player. Ultimately, the deciding set was 6-1 in favour of the World’s No. 8, who won 2012’s Roland Garros but lost during last year’s final.
Sharapova said she knew that it was going to be a difficult match because her opponent was a player that played with so much confidence.
After beating the Spaniard, the Russian will take on Eugenie Bouchard, the Canadian rising star. It was a tough start, but fortunately she had a good finish. The Spanish player was so aggressive at the beginning, so Sharapova has to improve her movement and serving, she said.
The Russian player was the number seven seed in the contest because of her bad start with 4-0 before winning.
Muguruza, on the other hand, is such a formidable opponent as she defeated Serena Williams, the defending Roland Garros champion, earlier in the contest at 6-2 6-2. Muguruza played with such quality and verve that goes beyond her young age of 21.
Besides Muguruza, Carla Suarez Navarro is another Spaniard who got defeated during the quarterfinal after wasting a 4-1 lead in the final set.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Bouchard is ranked 16th in the world as she fought back in a match with scores at 7-6 2-6 7-5. This is the second consecutive grand slam semi final game for the Canadian, who lost against Li Na during this year’s Australian Open.
