Google, Amazon and Microsoft Join Forces For Container Project

Most recently, we reported about a WWDC announcement by Apple called Bitcode that was going to facilitate how developers take on the task of creating apps and making them compatible for all sorts of platforms. Well, we have the same kind of good news here, but the project is of a much bigger scale and involves companies that we aren’t necessary used to seeing working with each other. The adventure of the program called Docker is proof that we’re living in a new era where big companies can cooperate with each other in an open source project for the greater good of the developers community. The news is very exciting and the rise of Docker is very impressive as well. Seeing Microsoft come into the mix with something associated with Linux is also something we’re not really used to witness.

So, news have come saying that Google, Amazon and Microsoft have come together to work on an open container project, which will affect the development of future software as well. The announcement came around DockerCon 2015, which is an event that took place in San Francisco, California on June 22nd and 23rd. Docker is responsible for this container technology that saves developers time and effort when it comes to developing software. This new project represents a great advancement in scale for this technology. Docker is no small company with a valuation that’s been on the rise especially during the last year.

Join Forces For Container Project

Some people might be surprised to see Google, Amazon and Microsoft work together like this, especially with this happening around the Linux Foundation, but this project looks to be made for the greater good. Other companies are also involved such as IBM and Intel, and much like the Bitcode aspect of Apple we talked about earlier last week, the Docker technology is another thing that’s facilitating the work of developers in that it allows software to easily run just about anywhere. Docker takes care of the creation, shipping and running of applications.

The project will stand as non-profit and be aimed at bringing the promising technology to the next level. Docker is the kind of company that likes to work in collaboration with others through its open source format and allow themselves to give away some of the power as well to further establish the technology as the standard. The containers that we’re talking about here are meant to avoid the use of virtual machines, which were previously necessary for the deployment of apps. Previously, the same process would involve some recoding and conversion of the code, but containers are found to be very good facilitators for those working in the field. Docker is receiving rising support, as well as funding as it raised 95 more millions recently and is now said to be valued at around 1 billion dollars. Docker is said to be already saving companies considerable dollars when it comes to servers especially.
